About Us

The Leading Provider of Support Services in Southeast Michigan

For vulnerable and disabled individuals, the ordinary demands of life can sometimes seem insurmountable when attempted alone. Synod builds a “community of support” that bridges the gap between what a person can accomplish on his or her own and what is needed for full participation in community life. Our financial, health and housing services are available individually or in combination according to need.

Synod has a community wide reputation for empathetic, quality care because we go the extra mile for our clients. Founded in 1973, our focus has always been on the individual and his or her experience of life.

We offer support services specifically tailored to address the unique personalities and life circumstances of our clients. These services include:

If you or a loved one are faced with insurmountable challenges, you don’t have to face them alone. Join our support community.

Our Vision: We believe that all people have the right to live, to grow and to learn, but most importantly, the right to be full members of the community where they live.

Synod Residential Services is a private, 501(c) (3), not-for-profit human service organization that provides individualized mental health, housing and related support services to people with psychiatric and other disabilities throughout southeastern Michigan.

Synod was formed in 1973, when two residential aides from the Ypsilanti State Hospital, moved by a desire to take patients beyond long-term institutional care, brought 15 mentally ill men out of the hospital and into a single group home they called Synod House.

Today, 35 years later, our clients’ needs have directed the expansion of our services to include a wider variety of housing options that include both staffed and unstaffed settings. We also provide additional individual services available to all of our clients, whether they participate in our housing options or not. These include financial advocacy, health-related services, and personal enrichment and assistance services such as grooming, food and nutrition, music therapy and therapeutic recreational camp.

Our service population has similarly expanded to include the elderly, the homeless, persons with mental illness, substance abuse disorders, brain injury, HIV/AIDS and those deemed medically fragile. We employ over 200 staff members who daily serve 350 men and women who live in southeastern Michigan.

Throughout our growth, our mission has stayed the same: To provide individualized service that maximizes dignity and independence. We have since taken a leadership role and serve as sponsors, bringing a wide variety of community resources to bear on the lives and needs of disabled people throughout our geographical area.

The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits our community housing and psychosocial rehabilitation services. Read more about our licensing and accreditations.

Staff members show a strong dedication to providing the most individualized service possible to the persons served. They accomplish this by dedicated efforts to obtain input from these individuals regarding their dreams, desires, and needs, which is then used in service planning and delivery.” (CARF 2005 Survey)
