Homeless
Over a five-year period, 5 to 8 million people in the U.S. will experience at least one night of homelessness. Ten percent of these are homeless on a chronic, protracted basis for as long as 7 to 8 months in a two-year period. Disabilities associated with mental illness and substance abuse are common, and this group can account for up to 50% of those seeking emergency shelter. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill estimates that 33% of all homeless adults suffer from a major mental illness. In Washtenaw County alone, an estimated 200 people a day are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
